Born from a stalled customer race car project and what essentially amounts to spare parts from around the shop, Project Stuka was the primary Lüfteknic shop project for the second half of 2014. The 1979 SC shell went from the chassis table to completed car in less than two months, with most of the final work, paint and assembly taking place over the final two weeks. The donor had in a previous life had factory metal 930 flares added, which remain untouched except for clearancing to fit the much-wider-than-stock front wheel and tire package to the car.
The paintwork inspiration came from multiple sources, but it all started around a way to keep the original paint 1968-69 Signal Yellow non-sunroof clip (installed to increase helmet clearance compared to the sunroof version, in addition to a 30lb weight savings) in tact, even with the car being Guards Red. We have a few airplane enthusiasts here on staff and after some brainstorming sessions and discussions, a concept was hatched. The original concept was taken from a WWII dive bomber, the Stuka, but the color concept was actually taken from a design used on planes in WWI called ‘Lozenge’ camouflage.
With input from shop customers / friends Josh Brown and Gibbs Connors things moved forward, and Senior here at Lüfteknic took the ball and ran with it, handling color selection, layout, and painting. The flat sections and rear deck lid were all sprayed normally, with flattening agents used on some sections, while the lozenge pattern was hand-painted by Senior using One-shot sign paint. The results, with the flat-red interior, speak for themselves and as we say, love it or hate it, the Stuka is bound to stoke an opinion. Under the wild paint, lies a very capable early air-cooled car with a host of top-line equipment and parts.
